Teachers everywhere — I have three questions.

  1. Do any of you have experience utilizing the Fishbowl Instructional Strategy?
  2. Do you think that ChatGPT can be used to elevate the strategy’s depth and engagement?
  3. Have you ever asked ChatGPT how, if at all, the bot could be used to elevate the strategy’s depth and engagement??

I’m asking because I am planning to use it in the near future, though I don’t use it often, so I just asked the bot if it could be used to elevate the strategy’s depth and engagement.

Here’s what came back:

  1. Preparation: Commence by directing students to review the documents from the American Revolution era, identifying the central arguments and responses to British initiatives.
  2. ChatGPT-Generated Questions: Before the fishbowl discussion unfolds, students can interact with ChatGPT to create relevant questions about the documents, offering depth to the conversation within the inner circle.
  3. Model Discussion with ChatGPT: As a warm-up, a subset of students can showcase a discussion session with ChatGPT. By interrogating the bot about the content of the documents, their historical background, and key insights, they can set the tone for effective discourse.
  4. Feedback & Verification using ChatGPT: Post-discussion, the students in the outer circle can harness ChatGPT for fact-checking and procuring supplementary insights. This ensures the core of the discussion remains precise and thorough.
  5. Deep Dive Post-Discussion: After the fishbowl session, students can further liaise with ChatGPT to explore more about the intriguing facets or areas highlighted during the discussion.
  6. Assessment Creation: As an educator, capitalize on ChatGPT to devise assessment tools rooted in the fishbowl discussion, from quizzes to extensive essay questions.

What do you make of this? Personally, I’m not at all sure but so curious that I’m planning to put this integrated approach to the test a month from now when teaching the American Revolution in my US History class.
