High quality learning games can now be created and hosted while on the go

Hours ago, the game-based and extraordinarily popular learning platform known as Kahoot! launched a major mobile update that will allow my students to use their smartphones or tablets to create and host kahoots right in the Kahoot! app.

My students now no longer need to rely on the classroom computers to go from consumers of content to creators of knowledge. Now they can also create knowledge while on the go.

  • To view a 1:26 video describing how students can create a kahoot in the app, click here.
  • To view a 1:03 video in which the co-founder of Kahoot! Describes how the new Kahoot! App update gives all students some very special ‘super powers’, click here.

When students are given an opportunity to create knowledge (aka given an opportunity to ask questions rather than merely be expected to answer questions) they take greater ownership of their learning, deepen comprehension, and are more inclined to make new connections and meaningful discoveries.

And when they can create these questions in a place of their choosing and at their own time, they are more motivated than ever to learn.

For a teacher, it doesn’t get any better.

Though the school year only ended recently, I am already looking forward to the fall, if only to see what kahoots my students will produce with their smartphones.

Sidenote:

  • According to a recent Kahoot! survey of more than 1,500 U.S. K-12 teachers , 1 in 5 teachers say that they encourage their students to create their own kahoots.
  • To read an article I wrote in February of 2018 for the KQED In the Classroom website and entitled The Student-Produced Kahoot and Learning How to Ask Good Questions, click here.
  • With the update, students will now also be able to host kahoots right from their mobile devices by screen mirroring on a larger screen through AirPlay or Chromecast.
