APUSH Second-Semester LEQ/DBQ Prompts

Thirty prompts created for the benefit of teachers attending one of my free 2020 APUSH Online Writing Seminars.

In 2020, some of the APUSH teachers attending one of my APUSH Writing Seminars asked me to create ten-to-fifteen LEQ/DBQ prompts that the teachers could use to better assess their students’ ability to earn the contextualize point and the thesis point.

Below, my response to these teachers’ request.

  1. Evaluate the extent to which the Civil Rights movement fostered political change in the United States from 1954 to 1968.
  2. Evaluate the extent to which the lives of women in the United States changed from 1920–1980.
  3. Evaluate the extent to which the lives of women changed during the Progressive Era (1890–1920).
  4. Evaluate the extent to which the U.S. federal government attempted to end the Great Depression.
  5. Evaluate the extent to which the Industrial Revolution improved the standard of living for many Americans from 1900–1945.
  6. Evaluate the extent to which the Industrial Revolution fostered economic change in the United States from 1865–1900.
  7. Evaluate the extent to which muckrakers sught to bring about economic change in the United States from 1890 to 1920.
  8. Evaluate the extent to which the Progressives, on the national level, sought federal legislation that they believed would effectively expand democracy.
  9. Evaluate the extent to which the Progressives, on the national level, sought federal legislation that they believed would generate moral reform.
  10. Evaluate the extent to which attitudes relating to trusts and trust-busting changed in the United States from 1890–1920.
  11. Evaluate the extent to which immigration to America changed from 1880–1925.
  12. Evaluate the relative importance of different causes for African American migration from the South to the North and West from 1916 to 1945.
  13. Evaluate the extent to which African American produced art and literature changed from 1920 to 1940.
  14. Evaluate the extent to which scientific or technological innovation changed the United States economy in the period from 1950 to 2000.
  15. Evaluate the extent to which attitudes toward immigrants changed in the United States from 1914 to 1917.
  16. Evaluate the extent to which American foreign policy changed from 1945–1968.
  17. Evaluate the extent to which the United States sought to contain communism from 1950–1968.
  18. Evaluate the extent to which the Cold War fluctuated between periods of direct and indirect military confrontation and periods of mutual coexistence (or détente) from 1960–1979.
  19. Evaluate the extent to which African American civil rights activists and leaders, combatted racial discrimination from 1955–1970.
  20. Evaluate the extent to which feminist and gay and lesbian activists fought for equality from 1960–1980.
  21. Evaluate the extent to which Latinos demanded equality and a redress of past injustices from 1960–1980.
  22. Evaluate the extent to which Native Americas demanded equality and a redress of past injustices from 1960–1980.
  23. Evaluate the extent to which Asian Americans demanded equality and a redress of past injustices from 1960–1980.
  24. Evaluate the extent to which Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring and the birth of the Modern Environmental Movement (1962) resulted in legislative and public efforts to combat pollution and protect natural resources in the United States from 1965–1980.
  25. Evaluate the extent to which liberal ideas found expression in Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society from 1963–1968.
  26. Evaluate the extent to which a resurgent conservative movement increasingly attacked liberalism from 1964–1988.
  27. Evaluate the extent to which a series of Supreme Court decisions expanded civil rights and individual liberties from 1950–1975.
  28. Evaluate the extent to which a newly ascendant conservative movement achieved several political and policy goals during the 1980s and continued to strongly influence public discourse in the following decades.
  29. Evaluate the extent to which Ronald Reagan’s victory in the presidential election of 1980 represented an important milestone.
  30. Evaluate the extent to which new developments in science and technology affected the economy of the United States from 1980–2015.

If any of the above look similar to a prompt appearing on the 2020 APUSH Exam, it’s purely by coincidence. I have not seen any of the prompts from last year’s test.
