Eight APUSH P6-P9 DBQs

Focusing on the Cold War, the Civil Rights Movement, the Women's Rights Movement, and US Global Expansion

Despite the title of this document, this blog post consists of something more than a mere collection of DBQ prompts. It also includes various content review tables, one-to-two sentence summaries for each of the eight prompt-relating documents presented, a curated list of potential additional evidence points, and a sample essay crafted in accordance with my DBQ writing strategy (with this strategy designed to equip students with what they need to achieve scores of at least a 5 out of 7.)

1. The Civil Rights Movement Prompt
   Evaluate the extent to which the Civil Rights Movement changed America from 1954 (Brown v. Board) to 1972 (four years after MLK’s assassination)
2. The Vietnam War Prompt
   Evaluate the extent to which America’s involvement in the Vietnam War changed America in the period from 1964 to 1973
3. The Ronald Reagan Cold War Policies Prompt
   Evaluate the extent to which President Ronald Reagan’s Cold War policies reduced tensions with the Soviet Union from 1980 to 1989.
4. The Post-1940 Economic Growth Prompt
   Evaluate the extent to which economic growth led to changes in US society in the period from 1940 to 1970
5. The Women’s Rights Prompt
   Evaluate the relative importance of the different causes of the rise of the women’s rights movement in the period from 1940 to 1975.
6. The Rise of a New Conservatism to Prominence Prompt
   Evaluate the relative importance of the different causes of the rise of a new conservatism to prominence in the United States between 1960 and 1989.
7. The US Expansion DBQ Prompt
   Evaluate the relative importance of the different causes of the United States’ expanding global role in the period from 1865 to 1910.
8. The Cold War Prompt
   Evaluate the extent to which the Cold War led to changes in United States society in the period from 1945 to 1980.
